ANIMUTATIONS

This spring, art will go wild in Sunset Park.

Tabla Rasa Gallery is pleased to present ANIMUTATIONS, a menagerie of animal inspired artwork.  All of the artists present their unique vision in a wide range of 2 and 3 dimensional media, photography, paint, ceramic sculpture, video and mixed media.

The exhibition, while focusing exclusively on works inspired by animals, shows remarkable stylistic range. From the romantic, whimsical fantasies of Stephen Basso's cats, to the visceral, stylized renderings of Tom Bennett's horses and dogs in motion, each artist in ANIMUTATIONS supplies a unique vision of the animal world's relevance to our own.

Working as a team for almost five years, Ginger Andro & Chuck Glicksman combine their individual visions in their collaborative installations.  Merging the avant-garde filmmaking and theatrical background of one with the more traditional painting and sculptural background of the other, they create an astonishing array of visual elements.

A champion for homeless animals, Laurie Bleier recycles domestic objects to embellish the architecture of her birdhouse sculptures.

Stephen Paul presents a painting that is monumental, in scale and character, a personal tribute to his deceased pet, and an iconographic eulogy to all lost animal companions.

Sculptor Susan Rowland uses the organic simplicity of clay and age-old glazing techniques to help emphasize the ancient purity of her fish, dogs and flying hippos.

Robin Ross paints vivid dreamscapes of conceptually mutated animal hybrids with an almost mythological reverence.

Twice the recipient of Guggenheim Fellowships, Thomas Roma will exhibit photographs from Brooklyn and Sicily. His work has appeared in one-person and group exhibitions internationally, including a solo show with accompanying books at both the Museum of Modern Art and the International Center of Photography.  Widely published, his books include Come Sunday, Found in Brooklyn, Old and On Their Own (with Robert Coles and Alex Harris), Sunset Park, and Higher Ground.

After living in India for three months, Yale graduate Jennifer Toth employs archetypal animal imagery to pose rhetorical questions relating to politics and identity.

Brian Young is a published poet and oil painter. Through humor and his bold use of color, Young paints an absurdist vision of the world that resonates with quirky innocence and pathos.

The gallery is located at 224 48th street, between 2nd and 3rd Avenues in SPArC (Sunset Park Artists' Community). The "R" train stops at 45th Street. Street parking is available.

Tabla Rasa Gallery is open to the public Fridays and Saturdays, from March 11th through June 3rd, from noon until 5 pm.
